WHAT TO EXPECT AT ERTC 2024
Key Themes of ERTC 2024, with Sandil Sanmugam
Published 16 August 2024
Ahead of the European Refining Technology Conference (ERTC), we caught up with Sandil Sanmugam (Managing Director of WRA) about what you can expect at ERTC 2024 and the key themes that will be being discussed over the 3 day event.
For those that don't know, can you please introduce yourself and your involvement in ERTC?
Hi, I’m Sandil, and I’ve spent the past eight years at the World Refining Association (WRA), where I now lead our portfolio with a focus on future-proofing the refining industry through sustainable technological solutions. Our conferences serve as the leading platform to connect innovative technologies with industry leaders, driving the transformation of refineries towards a sustainable future. Our WRA portfolio spans across Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia, with ERTC standing as the annual hub for the global refining community.
How has ERTC changed since you started working for the WRA?
ERTC is now in its 28th year and continues to be the leading platform for dialogue and innovation in the refining industry. Over the years, the agenda has evolved dramatically, reflecting the sector’s shifting priorities and the complex landscape it navigates. Today, more than ever, technology is at the forefront, serving as the critical enabler in future-proofing the business. This year’s discussions are focused not only on addressing the immediate challenges but also on strategically preparing for the medium and long-term shifts that will redefine the industry.
How will ERTC 2024 address these issues?
What sets the World Refinery Association apart is our deep connection with the industry. We recognise that refiners are at varying stages of the journey to future-proof their businesses. While some are maximising the potential of existing assets, others are grappling with new regulations centred on circularity and renewable fuels. The core themes of ERTC 2024 reflect this diversity and the complexity of the challenges ahead:
1. Maximising Existing Assets: For those following the traditional path, the focus is on optimizing current operations. This includes reducing emissions, enhancing efficiency, and leveraging digital tools to unlock further value.
2. Navigating Regulatory Challenges: The regulatory landscape remains as complex as ever, with new elections on the horizon and differing global approaches, such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) vs. the EU’s potentially rejigged Green Deal. Europe also faces a unique set of challenges, including the need to adapt to alternative regulatory models to maintain their competitive edge. This year’s agenda also delves into how global players like ADNOC, Aramco, Petronas, and YPF are addressing their challenges. It explores whether CBAM could be the key to European refiners’ survival in a highly competitive market.
3. Long-Term Viability through Hydrogen and Carbon Capture: Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) are positioned as long-term solutions for the industry. The agenda will explore the practicalities of integrating these technologies into existing operations and their potential to revolutionise the sector. It also covers challenges in selecting the right CCUS technology and techniques to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, underlining the significant theme of emissions control and carbon management as the industry seeks to meet regulatory demands and reduce its environmental impact.
4. Digital Transformation and AI: AI is making waves across industries, but its role in the refining sector remains a topic of debate. While AI tools like ChatGPT have revolutionised individual productivity, the question remains- can AI truly support the intricate and delicate chemical ecosystems within refineries? This year’s discussions will explore the potential and limitations of AI in refining. The focus on AI-enhanced multi-unit real-time optimization and digital twin technology points to a broader theme of digital transformation within the industry. The agenda will address how these advanced digital tools can enhance operational efficiency and process optimization across refinery operations.
5. SAF and Alternative Fuels: With sessions on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and the use of alternative fuels such as e-fuels, there is a clear emphasis on transitioning towards more sustainable fuel sources. This reflects the industry's ongoing efforts towards decarbonisation and developing alternative energy pathways. The re-evaluation of water usage and adapting wastewater treatment to biofuel processing highlights the importance of environmental management, including water conservation and waste minimization as critical components of sustainable refining operations.
6. Catalyst and Process Innovation: Finally, ERTC wouldn’t be the same without its focus on catalyst technology. With a spotlight on the latest technologies, such as mesoporous catalysts for chemical plastic waste recycling, effectively co-processing bio-feedstock, and breakthroughs in FCC catalyst innovation, the agenda ensures attendees stay one step ahead of their competitors.
The ERTC 2024 agenda is packed with sessions that address these key themes, providing a comprehensive view of the industry's current state and future direction. It is clear that the conversation at ERTC is not just evolving; it is setting the stage for the future of refining.
