ERTC 2024: KEY TAKEAWAYS
Sunfire
Published 27 March 2025

As we're gearing up to the European Refining Technology Conference (ERTC) 2025, we caught up with one of our sponsors, Sunfire to give you more insight into their company and their involvement in ERTC 2024.
What were the top 3 key takeaways or insights that stood out to you during the event?
1. Cross-value-chain partnerships are essential to accelerating the energy transition.
2. Europe’s ambitious plan to phase out fossil fuels is only achievable with green hydrogen.
3. The urgent need to translate European regulations (RED II/III) into actionable national laws, as
regulatory delays remain a major bottleneck for renewable projects
How was the event relevant to your company's role in the industry?
Last year's ERTC in Lisbon highlighed a pivotal moment for Europe's refining sector, emphasizing the urgent need for transformation and decarbonization. Refineries are not only thinking existing processes but also expanding into new business areas such as methanol and eSAF production. While the path forward is clear, challenges – particularly around regulatory clarity – remain.
How did the conference highlight industry challenges or opportunities that affect your company directly?
The event reinforced a shared industry commitment to decarbonization, recognizing that success will depend on collaboration, innovation, and regulatory alignment. At Sunfire, we are excited to contribute to this transformation – supporting refineries in their journey towards a sustainable future.
How do you see your company contributing to or leading in the industry based on the event's discussion?
Sunfire is at the forefront of refinery transformation with its leading electrolysis technology. The discussions at ERTC reaffirmed the crucial role of green hydrogen in industrial decarbonization. Sunfire brings its extensive experience to the development and implementation of innovative solutions that enable refineries to integrate green hydrogen into their operations effectively. With our extensive experience in both – AEL (Alkaline Electrolysis) and SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolysis) technologies – we provide refineries with flexible options to produce hydrogen efficiently—whether on-site within the refinery or through pipeline integration with a hydrogen grid. Both approaches have specific implications for electrolyzer design, and Sunfire has experience with both setups.
What are you looking forward to the most next year?
Reliability, strong partnerships, and close collaboration with project partners are the foundation of Sunfire’s success – reflected in the industrial follow-up orders and successful collaborations. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead: with focus, determination, and full commitment, Sunfire will continue to drive the industrial scaling of green hydrogen – staying true to its mission: Electrolysis Delivered At Scale.
Sunfire is a global leader in industrial electrolyzers. With Sunfire's innovative and proven solutions, the Germany-based company is addressing a key challenge of today's energy system: the provision of renewable hydrogen and syngas to replace fossil fuels. Sunfire's electrolyzers – based on alkaline and solid oxide technologies (SOEC) – enable the transformation of energy intensive sectors such as the chemical, fuel and steel industries.
